1. COMING UP - July's Creative Networks Event
Thursday 26th July - From 6.00pm until 10.00

The Collaborative Networking Event for Creative Industry Professionals

Big George Webley: Music, Broadcast and Profit
The musician, composer, broadcaster and musicologist, Big George Webley, will provide the keynote presentation for July’s Creative Networks meeting – and has he got news for you!

As well as composing a host of well-known TV theme tunes, including ‘Have I Got News for You’, Big George has won a Sony Radio Award for his ‘peerless passion for music of all varieties. He’s also presented ‘Inside Out’ in the BBC’s Eastern region and currently broadcasts on BBC Radio London.

Sharing the insight of his diverse career, Big George has a few shortcuts, a couple of horror stories and the odd showbiz anecdote to prepare anyone interested in the jungle that is show business - from its inherent difficulties to the new opportunities to exploit music for profit.

The next event is on Thursday 26th July 2007, at 6pm. There will be the usual opportunities to network, pitch your products and services and collaborate with colleagues from the Creative Industries Sector. Advance notice is strongly recommended for those wishing to pitch.

This event is free, if you would like to join us, please email scarlet.scardanelli@tic.ac.uk, or phone 07969 226 693. Alternatively, you can register online on the Creative Networks portal www.creativenetworksonline.com. You’ll be very welcome.

2. Review of June's Creative Networks Event - SUMMER PARTY

The Collaborative Networking Event for Creative Industry Professionals

SUMMER PARTY
Last Thursday saw the first Creative Networks to be held outside of tic and even though things were a tad chilly and damp, the event was a great success and the organisers (Scarlet, Ha, Rooty Frooty’s Kent Davies and Jane Trobridge from Slick Events) would really like to thank everyone for their support and feedback about the event.

With a great party atmosphere the event had a staggering turnout of delegates and it seems everyone had a really fun time. A marquee set in the drained pool of the Custard Factory provided a unique and interesting venue for the evening and a great arena for our guests, the energetic Drummerbuzz and the mellow Swamp Meat both of whom put on fantastic shows for the delegates.

Networking 1   Networking 1   Networking 1

The event was something completely different from the usual CN. As well as changing location, the event had a new format with the usual CN networking/speaker scenario making room for an event that was aimed more on the social side of business and emphasised the need for networking and communication between attendees. This new format was a great environment for those who came to last months networking themes event to put the skills they learnt into practice.

The involvement and interaction within the event was fantastic with the crowd really taking to Drummerbuzz, especially when it came to trying out their drumming skills in a monster drumming jam workshop that got both the heartbeat and the crowd pumping.

Finally we would also like to thank everyone who contributed to the evening, both with feedback, comments, vox-pops and opinions expressed to CN staff. We managed to get some great feedback from you and some interesting ideas for further CN events. The CN team itself also did a sterling job taking photographs and film footage of the evening, all of which will be up and loaded onto the CN website www.creativenetworkonline.com soon.

Hopefully we will see you again next month when things return to ‘normal’ back here at tic where we have the privilege of welcoming Big George, whose musical skills for television theme tunes have made him one of the best regarded and most recognised names in the music/tv industry.

3. The Music Network

The Music Network leads a monthly networking event at the tic for all music related businesses from the West Midlands region.

Running successfully for over 5 years, their meetings have proved inspirational in the support, development and promotion of thousands of music related activities.

If you have news to report, events to promote, points for discussion or a pitch to make, the Music Network will be useful for you.

They offer access to contacts, opportunities, help, advice and guidance - and even free tea and biscuits.

The Music Network is a voluntary, not for profit, social enterprise organisation seeking charitable status. Meetings take place on the last Thursday of each month, 4-6pm at UCE Birmingham Technology Innovation Centre (tic), Millennium Point, Curzon Street, Birmingham, B4 7XG.

6. Call for film/video footage

One of tic’s lecturers, Martin Robinson, is looking for film/video material that could be used by third year students within modules concerning sound and music production for film and/or video. He is looking for something that would allow students to include the finished product in their portfolio - so it would need to be something where these rights were available, although the rights would not need to go beyond that.

Martin says: “For the 1st assignment ideally I’m thinking of wildlife documentary footage since this would allow scope for adding a voice-over, sound effects and music. For this assignment I’m hoping to give the same footage to all the students for them to add the soundtrack/s. However, other types of material should allow scope for these activities too. For the 3rd assignment I’m hoping the students can find their own short video/film and/or choose from a selection I make available. In both cases I’m looking for material that’s between 3-5mins although of course longer material could be edited down.’

If you have any material which could be used in this way please email: martin.robinson@tic.ac.uk

7. Work experience opportunities

We are a small group of students based in Wolverhampton who have had a degree of success with a number of factual client orientated videos.

With the help of a scriptwriting finalist from the Screen West Midlands Digital Shorts scheme we are currently preparing to develop a number of short films and are looking for CAST and CREW to help with the realisation of these projects.

If you would like the experience of working on a film set and are looking to add to your CV please contact Lewis, the producer, using the following details:
